QUICK TIP

Are your employees viewing incentives as bribes?

When running internal tactical incentives, it’s important to let participants know the business realities behind the campaign. Are you worried?  Excited? Showing trust by being open and honest will be more effective in rallying the troops behind your objectives.

Suddenly, rewards are no longer viewed as bribes but as thanks for the extra efforts to help the organization get out of a jam, launch an important product line or win a significant account.

Showcase people who support the initiative along the way.  Knowing that colleagues are positive and successful will help squelch naysayers.

In the end, success will speak for itself.

I see proof of the power of intrinsic motivation every day; it’s the secret sauce that gets us out of bed in the morning and enables our team to operate at such high intensity, while remaining focused and smiling most of the time.

BUT.  If I had a warehouse full of blue widgets that simply had to go (now!), I would definitely add a bit of excitement with a special incentive to quickly focus the team on the specific – and pressing – sales challenge.

Taking ownership for the well-being of our company – and being the great competitors that they are, no doubt the team would challenge each other for bragging rights as to who will move the most widgets. Not hurting the cause in the least, they would score themselves some nice rewards in the process.

Intrinsic and extrinsic in perfect harmony. Win-win. Those widgets would be out the door in no time at all.

Let the razzing begin!
